Dedicated to one of the oldest and largest educational institutions in Ukraine, the center of education and science, in which traditions are preserved and enhanced, new ideas are nurtured, the national intelligentsia is formed, and the freedom-loving spirit is supported.
On the obverse of the coin there are: at the top the small State Emblem of Ukraine, the inscription in a semicircle NATIONAL BANK OF UKRAINE; stylized composition - against the background of portraits of prominent personalities involved in the creation and activities of Kyiv University, Saint Vladimir is depicted; below the denomination is 5 HRYVEN, on the right is the year of minting 2014.
On the reverse of the coin, on a mirror background, the building of the Kyiv National University named after Taras Shevchenko is depicted (on the nickel silver coin the building is red, pad printing is used), a monument to Taras Shevchenko; at the bottom are the inscriptions 180/YET, 1834, 2014; At the top in a circle there is the inscription KIEV NATIONAL UNIVERSITY NAMED AFTER TARAS SHEVCHENKO.
