The coin depicts the Weir Farm National Historic Site in Connecticut, which includes a 68-acre cultural landscape consisting of 15 historic structures including homes, barns, studios and outbuildings. The landscape includes bedrock outcrops, historic gardens, rock terraces, specimen trees, orchards, fields, miles of rock walls, a pond, and hundreds of historic scenic spots—all beautifully preserved. The artistic tradition at Weir Farm is maintained through a variety of Arts in the Park programs, including an artist residency program, free art supplies, painting nights, and art classes.
This reverse (tail) shows the artist in a painter's robe, painting outside Julian Alden Weir's studio at Weir Farm. It is inspired by various images of the studio and Weir's paintings produced on the site, as well as descriptions of Weir's and his fellow rural artist's creative inspiration.
