The 2022 Native American $1 Coin honors Eli Samuel Parker, a U.S. Army officer, engineer, and tribal diplomat who served as Ulysses S. Grant's secretary of war during the American Civil War. When Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox, Virginia, on the morning of April 9, 1865, Parker presented the official surrender papers in his own hand.
On the obverse (head) the central figure of “Sacagawea” is preserved, carrying his little son Jean Baptiste in his arms.
The reverse (tail) features Eli Samuel Parker in his Army uniform. The pen and book, as well as the image of his elegant signature, are symbols of his expertise as an expert communicator. The inscriptions "TONAWANDA SENECA" and "HA-SA-NO-AN-DA" identify his tribe and his birth name.
