The American $1 Innovation Coin, representing Virginia, is a symbol of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Opened in 1964, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel connects southeastern Virginia to the entire Delmarva Peninsula.
The 17-mile-long bridge tunnel complex consists of 12 miles of low-level trestle, two one-mile tunnels, two bridges, a two-mile causeway and four artificial islands. The unique structure is considered the world's largest bridge-tunnel complex and is recognized as one of the seven engineering wonders of the modern world.
The obverse (head) depicts the Statue of Liberty in profile. The obverse also features a secret symbol of a stylized mechanism, symbolizing industry and innovation.
The reverse (tail) shows a cutaway view of the Chesapeake Bay Tunnel, illustrating the ingenuity that went into its construction.
