The same flower, Jasminum sambac, is a national flower in two neighbouring countries at once: in the Philippines it is called sampaguita, in Indonesia melati putih. The Indonesian 500 rupiah of 2001 carries it on the reverse together with the words BUNGA MELATI and the value 500 RUPIAH.
This is the second «jasmine» type of the 500 rupiah: introduced in 1997 to replace the 1991 design, it was struck in aluminium bronze until 2003. The obverse bears the Garuda Pancasila emblem, the motto BHINNEKA TUNGGAL IKA, the date and the words BANK INDONESIA.
For Indonesians white jasmine stands for purity and sincerity, and its buds adorn the bride and groom at Javanese and Sundanese weddings. Coins of this type were withdrawn from circulation on 1 December 2023, so the 1997–2003 run is now complete for collectors.
Condition F-VF, Fine to Very Fine: signs of circulation are visible and the wear is even, yet the flower, the emblem and every inscription read clearly.
Coins from the VPcoins catalogue are collected by seasoned numismatists and newcomers alike.
