The Tokyo Olympic mascot was chosen by schoolchildren: between December 2017 and February 2018, 205,755 elementary school classes voted, and the pair created by artist Ryo Taniguchi won 109,041 votes. The Olympic half of that pair, Miraitowa, went on to a commemorative 100 yen coin.
The name joins the Japanese words «未来» (mirai, future) and «永久» (towa, eternity): the organisers wanted to wish people all over the world a future full of eternal hope. The character’s blue chequered pattern echoes the «ichimatsu» motif of the Games emblem, a check design popular in the Edo period.
The obverse shows Miraitowa with «日本国» (State of Japan) and the denomination «百円»; the reverse carries the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 emblem and the date «令和2年», Reiwa year 2. The coin was part of the fourth issue of the programme, with a mintage of 3,948,000.
It is the only Olympic hundred of the programme that features a character instead of an athlete, and together with the Paralympic Someity coin it completes the pair of Games mascots. Uncirculated condition: never in circulation, no wear, original mint lustre intact.
This coin is one of the items in the VPcoins catalogue, which brings together commemorative, circulation and bullion coins from around the world.
