Someity, the Tokyo Paralympic mascot, has a name with a double meaning: it comes from «somei-yoshino», Japan’s best-known cherry blossom variety, and sounds like the English «so mighty». The character appears on the commemorative 100 yen coin that completes the Paralympic line of the programme.
It was drawn by the same artist as Miraitowa, Ryo Taniguchi; the pair was chosen by a vote of elementary school classes across Japan, and the names were announced on 22 July 2018. Someity’s chequered pattern is pink, like cherry blossoms. According to the character’s story, it is usually calm but becomes very powerful when needed, and it can fly and send telepathic messages.
The obverse shows Someity with «日本国» (State of Japan) and the denomination «百円»; the reverse carries the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games emblem and the date «令和2年», 2020. Mintage was 3,948,000. The edge ridges on the Paralympic hundreds are spaced wider than on the Olympic ones, so the coins can be told apart by touch.
In a Tokyo Games collection it pairs with the Olympic Miraitowa coin, and in a characters theme it puts a Games mascot on a circulating coin. Uncirculated condition: never in circulation, no wear, original mint lustre preserved.
A coin from the VPcoins range makes a good starting point for a themed selection or a date run.
