A quarter ounce is the lightest format of the silver «Noah’s Ark», the Armenian bullion coin issued every year by the Central Bank of Armenia since 2011–2012 and described by the issuer itself as the most expressive symbol of Armenian history.
The silver range runs from 1/4 ounce to 5 kilograms, with the face value rising with the weight: the quarter-ounce coin is denominated 100 dram. It is legal tender in the Republic of Armenia at face value. The Central Bank granted the right to strike and sell «Noah’s Ark» coins to the German company Geiger Edelmetalle, and they are struck by its affiliate Leipziger Edelmetallverarbeitungs, hence the «LEV» mark beside the coat of arms.
Eduard Kurghinyan’s design stays the same: the ark on the waters, a dove with an olive branch flying towards it, Mount Ararat and the sun behind. The scene comes from the Book of Genesis, in which the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat, the peak visible from Yerevan and shown on Armenia’s coat of arms. The other side bears the state arms, the marks «¼ Oz» and «Ag 999» and legends in Armenian and English.
Fine silver of 999 purity gives the coin its intrinsic value, while the unchanging design and annual issue make the Arks easy to collect by year. Uncirculated (UNC) grade: the coin has never circulated and shows no wear.
