About 295 million coins: no other 40% Kennedy half struck for circulation reached such a mintage. It was in 1967 that production of the «forty percent» half peaked.
It is also the last year without a mint mark: the letters removed under the 1965 law returned to coins in 1968, and on the obverse. In 1967, too, the Special Mint Sets begun in 1965 were issued for collectors for the last time.
The obverse carries Gilroy Roberts’ portrait of John F. Kennedy with the GR monogram, the reverse Frank Gasparro’s version of the presidential seal: an eagle with a shield, an olive branch and arrows.
The coin contains 40% silver: outer layers of 800 fine silver over a core of about 21% silver. In a Kennedy date set, 1967 closes the trio of dates without a mint mark, 1965–1967.
The F-VF grade: from F, with even, pronounced wear and legible main details and legend, to VF, where the high points show noticeable wear while the main details and inscriptions stay sharp.
A collection can grow in any direction, and the VPcoins catalogue has options for each of them.
