Two fencers meet in a bout, and one of them lunges forward — on the 2011 Olympic 50 pence fencing is caught at the moment of attack.
The coin belongs to the series of 29 fifty-pence pieces the Royal Mint issued for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games — one for each sport. The designs were chosen in an open competition: the British public sent in almost 30,000 entries, and the winners were selected anonymously by a panel of independent experts and representatives of the Royal Mint, London 2012 and the International Olympic Committee.
The design is by Ruth Summerfield. The obverse carries the fourth portrait of Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley.
For a collector this is the «fencing» slot in the 29-coin Olympic series, and in topical collections it belongs with sport on coins. F-VF condition means the coin has been in circulation: wear is visible on the high points of the relief, but the design and inscriptions read well — this is a genuine circulating 50 pence.
The VPcoins online shop was created for collectors of coins and banknotes who value a wide choice.
