The Ukrainian National Museum in Chicago was founded in 1952, and several generations of émigrés have gathered some 100,000 archival items on Ukrainian history and culture there. In November 2022 the National Bank of Ukraine dedicated a commemorative medal to it, a tribute to how the diaspora preserved Ukrainian heritage far from home.
The obverse is built around the idea of caring for that heritage: hands support the museum’s logo beneath a sprig of guelder rose, with the small State Coat of Arms, «UKRAINA» and the year below. The reverse shows the museum building against the Chicago cityscape, with «UKRAINSKYI NATSIONALNYI MUZEI» set vertically, the founding year «1952» and the word «CHYKAHO».
The museum stands in Chicago’s Ukrainian Village neighbourhood. Its holdings include embroidery, weaving, pysanky, musical instruments and works by émigré artists, while the archive documents Ukrainian communities in the United States; a separate exhibition is devoted to the Holodomor of 1932–1933.
The medal links a Ukrainian numismatic collection with the story of the diaspora in America and fits naturally into a set of NBU cultural medals. Uncirculated condition: the medal has never circulated and the relief is free of wear.
For collectors, VPcoins gathers numismatic items from many countries and eras in one catalogue.
