Several earlier coins in the Fauna in Cultural Monuments of Ukraine series look back to Scythian gold or Trypillian finds. The 2019 Horse (KM# 947) turns instead to the Christian art of Kyivan Rus, and its real protagonists are mounted saints rather than the animal on its own.
The gilded centre of the obverse reproduces part of an 11th-century Kyiv stone relief of St Eustace Placidus, with St George from a 15th-century icon to the right. One side of the coin thus sets carved stone beside icon painting, two ways of showing a rider separated by several centuries.
The reverse keeps to the same theme. A horse's head faces left; on the mirror field to its right run the vertical legend КІНЬ and a fragment of an 11th-century slate plaque in which holy riders trample a serpent. The victorious horseman links both faces, presenting the horse as part of the warrior's image.
Designed by Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk and Serhii Kharuk, engraved by Anatolii Demianenko, and struck in sterling silver with a mintage of 4,000. The coin has never been in circulation.
