A commemorative collector coin in nickel silver struck to special uncirculated quality. It marks the 1,070th anniversary of the founding of Vyshhorod, an ancient town first mentioned in the Tale of Bygone Years under the year 946 as the residence of the grand princess Olha, when it bore the name Olhynhrad. The flowering of the town is bound up with the rise of the Kyivan state in the ninth to thirteenth centuries. For a time the town served as the country residence of the grand princes of Kyiv. With Vyshhorod is connected the veneration of the first saints of Rus, Borys and Hlib, sons of the Kyivan prince Volodymyr Sviatoslavych.
The obverse has a mirror ground on which, at the top by the rim, is the horizontal legend УКРАЇНА. To the left of the legend is the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine. On the middle part of the obverse is a composition with stylised full-length figures of the princes Borys and Hlib, between whom is a cross that they uphold. Borys and Hlib were the first saints canonised as Orthodox princely passion-bearers; they stand on a stylised ornament issuing from the lower part of the cross. To the left of the composition is the legend with vertically set letters, БОРИС, and on the right, mirroring it, the legend ГЛІБ. Below the composition, under the ornament, is the single-line horizontal denomination 5 ГРИВЕНЬ. Below is the year of minting, 2016. On the right of the composition, near its lower part, is the mark of the Banknote and Coin Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine.
The reverse is notionally divided vertically into two parts. On the smaller, right part is a colour image of a fragment of one of the most ancient and famous icons, the Vyshhorod icon of the Mother of God, applied by pad printing. On the larger, left part is a thematic composition on several planes with a stylised three-domed church in the middle distance. In the foreground a prince and his wife ride out of the town gates. Below the composition and the icon is the two-line horizontal legend in a script stylised after Old Church Slavonic, ДАВНІЙ ВИШГОРОД / 946 РІК.
