«ЧЕМПІОН ЧЕМПІОНІВ» («Champion of champions») was Ivan Piddubnyi’s nickname, and these words appear on the obverse of this 2021 commemorative 2 hryvnia coin. The National Bank of Ukraine issued it for the 150th anniversary of the legendary wrestler, famed for his Herculean strength, agility and willpower.
The obverse centres on a stylised medal on a ribbon wrapped around the globe, flanked by wrestling scenes; «УКРАЇНСЬКИЙ БОГАТИР» runs above and «ЧЕМПІОН ЧЕМПІОНІВ» below, with the small coat of arms, «УКРАЇНА», 2021 and «2 ГРИВНІ». The reverse carries the wrestler’s portrait and the inscription «ІВАН ПІДДУБНИЙ 1871 1949».
Over forty years of competing Piddubnyi never lost a championship and became a legend of European sport. The coin was designed by Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk and Serhii Kharuk and sculpted by Sviatoslav Ivanenko and Anatolii Demianenko. Mintage 35,000, «Outstanding Personalities of Ukraine» series.
It is a central piece for a «sport on coins» collection and for the wrestling theme. UNC condition: the coin has never circulated, and the relief of the figures on the obverse shows no wear.
