The hill crowned by St George's Cathedral is among the oldest sacred sites in Lviv. Tradition dates the first church and monastery here to about 1280, under Prince Lev Danylovych; in 1340 King Casimir III of Poland destroyed the wooden church and its fortifications. A bell cast the very next year, 1341, still hangs in the cathedral belfry and is regarded as the oldest in Ukraine.
The present Baroque cathedral became the mother church of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and served as the see of the Halych metropolitans from 1817 to 1946. Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky lies in its crypt. After the Lviv church council of 1946 the Soviet authorities handed the building to the Russian Orthodox Church; it was returned to the Greek Catholics only in 1990.
Part of the Architectural Monuments of Ukraine series, this 2004 coin shows a panorama of the cathedral on the reverse with the legend Lviv.
