2002 is the biggest year in the history of this 100,000 lira: of its four years of striking, 2001 to 2004, it accounts for 165.75 million coins, more than any other. The reverse spells the value briefly as 100 BİN LİRA, «100 thousand lira».
The obverse shows a bust of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk with the legend TÜRKİYE CUMHURİYETİ; the reverse has the value beneath a crescent and star with the date below. The edge is plain and the sides are in medal alignment: turn the coin around its vertical axis and the reverse appears the same way up as the obverse. The alloy is nickel brass of 65% copper, 18% nickel and 17% zinc.
This coin belongs to the last generation of the old lira: in 2001–2004 it was struck alongside the 25,000 and 50,000 lira, joined from 2002 by the 250,000. In 2005 Turkey redenominated its currency, and by the new reckoning 100,000 old lira equalled ten new kuruş.
With a mintage this large, condition is what sets a piece apart: in UNC the coin never circulated, has no wear and keeps its mint lustre, with only minor bag marks allowed.
