The 1000 lira of the 1990 pattern stayed in production for just five years: in 1995 a new type of the same denomination replaced it. The final year, 1994, unexpectedly became one of the largest, with 61.5 million coins after 15.8 million in 1992 and 11.7 million in 1993.
The obverse carries the head of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk facing left and the legend TÜRKİYE CUMHURİYETİ. On the reverse the value 1000 LİRA and the date are framed by ears of wheat, with a star and a crescent opening to the right above. The coin was struck by the Turkish State Mint (Darphane) in Istanbul in nickel brass: 69.5% copper, 18% zinc, 12% nickel and 0.5% manganese.
For an old lira collection this coin is the closing year of the 1990–1994 type with its wheat-ear reverse. Beside it in a date run, the large 100 lira coins of the late 1980s show at a glance how quickly the sums on Turkish coins were climbing.
Uncirculated (UNC): the coin never circulated, has no wear and retains its mint lustre, with only minor bag marks acceptable.
