The legend «BON POUR 1 FRANC», «good for 1 franc», reveals the coin’s origin: the Tunisian franc of 1921 belongs to the Chambers of Commerce coinage, struck after the model of the French «bon pour» pieces of the time.
The reverse shows «BON POUR», a large «1» and «FRANC» between two branches, with the Arabic legend «يقبل في فرنك واحد», «accepted for one franc», below. The obverse carries «TUNISIE», an Arabic legend, the Hijri date «١٣٤٠» and the date «1921».
The aluminium bronze coin, weighing 4 g and measuring 23 mm, was struck by the Paris Mint and engraved by Henri-Auguste Patey; the edge is reeded and it is catalogued as KM# 247. According to Numista, 5,000,027 of these coins were struck in 1921 (AH 1340), and the type was issued until 1945.
The 1921 coin is the first year of the type and a good companion to the French «bon pour» francs of the same years. F-VF condition: the coin saw noticeable circulation and the high points of the relief are smoothed, but the legends and the branches read well.
A collection can grow in any direction, and the VPcoins catalogue has options for each of them.
