On 9 June 1996 King Bhumibol Adulyadej marked 50 years on the throne, and for the Golden Jubilee Thailand issued commemorative coins across a whole range of denominations, from 1 satang to 20 baht. This 10 satang is one of the smallest coins in the series.
The aluminium coin weighs less than a gram yet carries the full jubilee symbolism. The reverse shows the emblem of the celebrations: the crowned royal seal between two elephants beneath seven-tiered chatra parasols, the numeral 50 and a motto on a ribbon, surrounded by an inscription on the fiftieth year of the reign and the date 9 June 2539 of the Buddhist era.
The obverse shows the king facing the viewer, surrounded by his full royal title. The reign of Rama IX began on 9 June 1946, and the coronation took place in 1950.
For a Golden Jubilee set, the 10 satang is a needed position. The grade is UNC: the coin has never circulated, shows no wear and retains its mint luster.
A coin from the VPcoins catalogue is a gift that is interesting to examine and has a story worth telling.
