In the Bernese Oberland the cattle’s descent from the Alps is preceded by the old «Chästeilet», the sharing-out of cheese: each farmer receives a portion in proportion to the milk his cows gave over the summer. The custom shown on the Swiss 10 francs of 2015 thus links the festival to the result of a whole season on the high pastures.
Each region celebrates in its own way. In some places only the cows with the highest milk yield are decorated, in Appenzell only the lead cow wears a bell, and the procession comes with whip-cracking, alphorn playing and flag-swinging.
Réhane Favereau, a Geneva-born artist based in Chambésy, made the design as a paper cutting, entirely in black and white. The coin was issued on 22 January 2015 and became the last in the «Swiss customs» series.
For a collection of Swissmint bimetallic 10 francs it is the closing piece of the customs cycle. UNC: never circulated.
