The coin features Salt River Bay National Historic Park and Ecological Preserve, a living museum on St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. It has an archaeological and historical heritage dating back over 2,000 years, which exists in a dynamic ecosystem that supports endangered species. In 1992, Congress created the Salt River Bay as part of the National Park System to preserve, protect and tell the story of its rich contributions to the nation’s natural and cultural heritage.
The reverse (tails) shows a red mangrove tree in the early stage of its life cycle, when it develops from a very small plant to a mature tree. The design draws attention to the park’s endangered mangrove forests and the unique and delicate nature of how this species reproduces in saltwater.
