Established in 1966 as our first national lakeshore, Michigan’s Peaky Rocks National Lakeshore is a narrow strip of parkland that spans more than 40 miles of Lake Superior shoreline. The coastline consists of colorful 200-foot-high sandstone cliffs, numerous beaches, and 300-foot-high sand dunes. The coastline is bordered by boreal and eastern deciduous forests with numerous waterfalls, streams and lakes. It’s home to plenty of wildlife, including black bears, deer and porcupines, while bald eagles and peregrine falcons dot the skies.
The coin features Chapel Rock and a white pine tree growing at the top. Design candidates were developed in consultation with Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore representatives.
