John Tyler was born in 1790 into a family of prominent Virginia planters. He was a lawyer by training. He served as a delegate and governor of Virginia, a U.S. representative, a U.S. senator, and vice president for one month under William Henry Harrison.
Tyler became the first vice president to take office after the death of a sitting president. At the time, the US Constitution did not have a clear definition of succession, and his entire presidency was dominated by questions about the scope of his presidential powers, earning him the nickname «His Accident». Although many believed he should be recognized only as an acting president with limited powers, Tyler set an important precedent by assuming all the duties and powers of an elected president.
His independent approach caused him to fall out of favor with his Whig political party, and virtually his entire cabinet resigned in protest of his veto of the National Bank Bill. He championed Texas statehood, a controversial proposal at the time. After much political wrangling, he signed the Texas annexation bill just three days before leaving office following his defeat in the 1844 election. He retired to his home in Virginia, Sherwood Forest, named to reflect his political status as an «outlaw.» He died in Richmond, Virginia in 1862.
