Breadfruit, Artocarpus altilis, a tree of the mulberry family, appears on the reverse of Samoa’s 2002 20 sene: its fruits beside the value «20 SENE».
The design goes back to James Berry’s 1974 series, in which every circulation denomination received an edible plant of the islands. In 2002 the reverse was kept and the obverse updated: around Thomas Humphrey Paget’s portrait of Malietoa Tanumafili II the legend now reads «MALIETOA TANUMAFILI II SAMOA», without the former «I SISIFO», since the country had dropped «Western» from its name in 1997.
The new legend made this a type of its own, KM# 133, struck by the Royal Australian Mint from 2002 to 2006. For a Samoan collection it is the first date of the type, and for a plants-on-coins set it is the way to add breadfruit.
The AU-UNC grade sits on the border between AU and UNC: no signs of circulation, or only faint ones on the highest points, with the mint lustre almost fully retained.
A collectable coin from VPcoins can be an addition to your own collection or a meaningful gift.
