In 2007 North Korea marked the 95th anniversary of the birth of Kim Il Sung (1912–1994) not with a new design but with an inscription: a line reading «95th birthday of the Great Leader Comrade Kim Il Sung» was added to every denomination of the current series.
The base is the fifty won of the 1992 series: the Juche Tower in Pyongyang with its sculpture of a worker with a hammer, a peasant with a sickle and an intellectual with a brush, with young professionals beside it; the back shows fir trees and Mount Paektu.
The date in the design is 1992, while the commemorative inscription was added in 2007. Five years later the device was repeated: in 2012 a similar series appeared with an inscription for Kim Il Sung’s 100th birthday.
For a North Korea collection it is a commemorative piece of the 2007 anniversary issue; placed beside the ordinary note of the same design, it shows how North Korea marked the leader’s anniversaries with an inscription on everyday money. UNC condition means the note has never circulated: no folds, no wear, no soiling, even corners — just as it left the press.
Collectors who focus on a single country will find its other banknote issues in the VPcoins catalogue as well.
