After a seven-year break the nickel guilder of the Netherlands Antilles returned in 1978: from 1972 to 1977 this coin with Queen Juliana’s portrait was not issued at all.
The design stayed the same, the work of medallist Ludwig Oswald Wenckebach. The obverse shows Juliana’s profile with the legend «JULIANA KONINGIN DER NEDERLANDEN», the reverse the crowned arms of the Netherlands Antilles, the value «1 G» and the motto «LIBERTATE UNANIMUS» («United in Freedom»). In the same year, 1978, a nickel 2½ guilder in matching style joined the guilder.
The 1978 mintage was 500,000 pieces, struck by the Royal Dutch Mint in Utrecht with the cock privy mark of the mint master. Juliana’s reign had two years left to run: the last guilders of her type are dated 1980.
For date collectors this is one of the late dates of the type. Grade VF-AU: signs of circulation are present, but the portrait, arms and legends remain legible.
