Oura Cathedral, chosen by Nagasaki Prefecture for its 2015 silver 1000 yen coin, is dedicated to the 26 Martyrs of Japan, executed in Nagasaki in 1597. The church faces Nishizaka hill, the site of their martyrdom. Its location was chosen in 1862 by Father Furet of the Paris Foreign Missions Society.
The church was built in 1864 and reached its present form after an enlargement completed in 1879. It has been a National Treasure of Japan since 1933. On the coin the building is framed by camellia blossoms. Catalogue reference: Y# 239.
The Local Autonomy Law 60th anniversary programme ran for about eight years, from July 2008 into the first half of fiscal 2016, and Nagasaki's coin came in its closing stage. Struck in pure silver with a colour design and a mintage of 100,000, the coin has a mirror-field proof finish and comes in a souvenir pack with stamps.
