The Yomeimon on Tochigi Prefecture's coin is the gateway to the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Tokugawa line. Ieyasu died at Sunpu in 1616, and in 1617 his remains were reburied in the mountains of Nikko, which is where the story of Toshogu shrine begins.
The shrine owes the splendour seen today to the third shogun, Iemitsu, whose great rebuilding was completed in 1636. The Yomeimon dates from the same year.
The official theme of this 2012 issue, Y# 190, is "Tochigi, rich in nature, culture and history". It belongs to the Local Autonomy Law 60th anniversary programme, and the shared side hides the figures 60 and 47 as a latent image in the largest snowflake. Pure silver, 31.1 g, mintage 100,000, in a souvenir pack with stamps.
Proof finish: mirror fields and frosted relief.
