King Arthur on horseback, Excalibur raised, with Camelot — the legendary seat of the Knights of the Round Table — behind him: this is how David Lawrence portrayed the central hero of British legend on the 2023 one-ounce silver two-pound coin.
The coin opens the Arthurian trio of the Royal Mint’s «Myths and Legends» bullion series: Merlin followed Arthur in 2023, and Morgan le Fay was planned as the third figure. The Royal Mint issues these coins as bullion, for their metal content, while a subject drawn from the national epic sets them apart from ordinary ounces.
Arthur’s design comes with two obverses. The first bullion coins of 2023 carried Jody Clark’s posthumous portrait of Elizabeth II; the Mint then ended that version and moved to Martin Jennings’s portrait of Charles III. This example shows the new King: the legend reads «CHARLES III D G REX F D» with «2 POUNDS», and the reverse names «KING ARTHUR».
The coin’s value rests on one troy ounce of 999 fine silver guaranteed by the Royal Mint. The £2 face value makes it legal tender in the United Kingdom, although such coins are not released into circulation.
UNC grade: the coin has never circulated, shows no wear and keeps its mint lustre. In a «Myths and Legends» set this is the piece where the story of Camelot begins — and an Arthur already bearing the portrait of Charles III.
