In 2026 this 200 forint coin took first place in the international Coin of the Year competition in the best circulating coin category. Issued for the bicentenary of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, it entered circulation on 5 November 2025 in a mintage of one million.
The thematic side is the work of goldsmith János Balázs Bitó. Its composition draws on a painting by Johann Nepomuk Ender: Hebe, goddess of youth, offers the chalice of knowledge to an eagle representing the nation while holding a shield with the Hungarian coat of arms. The legend 200 ÉVES A MAGYAR TUDOMÁNYOS AKADÉMIA, «200 years of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences», is joined by the country name and the date. The reverse carries the value 200 FORINT and the BP. mark of the Budapest mint.
The Academy began with a gesture by Count István Széchenyi: at the 1825 Diet in Pozsony he pledged a year’s income from his estates to found the Hungarian Learned Society. Its first meeting took place on 17 November 1830, and it soon became the leading body of the country’s intellectual life.
The bimetallic coin matches the regular 200 forint in every specification, so it can turn up in everyday change. For a collector it plays several roles at once: a commemorative forint, an award-winning coin and a natural entry in a science-on-coins set.
Grade UNC: the coin never circulated, the fine details of the composition are free of wear and the mint lustre is intact.
A collectable coin from VPcoins can be an addition to your own collection or a meaningful gift.
