The Dragon is the only mythical creature among the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac, and on San Marino’s 2023 ten euros it appears in its Chinese form. The coin came out a year before the Year of the Dragon itself arrived in 2024.

Beside the dragon are the character chen, the fifth «earthly branch», the Italian DRAGO, the year and the value; the composition includes the red circle of the sun and a red pearl, which Chinese tradition often places beside a dragon. The obverse common to the «Lunar Calendar» series, with three stylised towers and plumes, laurel and oak branches and the sun among clouds, is likewise the work of Orietta Rossi.

The coin belongs to the second trio of the series together with the Rabbit and the Snake; it was struck by the Austrian Mint in an edition of 20,000. For a thematic collection of dragons it offers the eastern version of the subject on a euro coin. Grade UNC: never circulated, no wear.

The VPcoins catalogue brings together coins from many countries and eras, from circulation issues to commemorative series, so a collection is easy to continue.
