Portugal 10 Euro 2011 — 25th Anniversary of Portugal and Spain's Accession to the EU

This collector coin of 10 euro was released into circulation on 8 September 2011 by the Bank of Portugal to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Portugal and Spain's accession to the European Union. It was struck by the Portuguese Mint (INCM) and forms part of the country's series of European collector coins.

The obverse features a central composition of circles and semicircles inspired by the metal sheet used in the production of coin blanks. Along the left edge is the inscription "República Portuguesa", and along the right — the coat of arms of Portugal.

The reverse bears the inscription "XXV ANIVERSÁRIO DA ADESÃO DE PORTUGAL E ESPANHA À UNIÃO EUROPEIA", the dates "1986" and "2011", the denomination "10 EURO", and the mint mark "INCM".

Portugal and Spain signed the treaty of accession to the European Communities on 12 June 1985 and became official members on 1 January 1986. For both countries, this represented a landmark political and economic step following decades of authoritarian rule — the Salazar dictatorship in Portugal and the Franco regime in Spain. EU membership opened the way for economic modernisation and the strengthening of democratic institutions in both states.
