Barcelona 1992 was only the Maldives' second Olympic Games — and the first to which the island nation sent swimmers. Having debuted in Seoul in 1988, four years later the country entered two swimmers, Ahmed Imthiyaz and Mohamed Rasheed, in freestyle events.
This silver 250 rufiyaa with a swimmer and a diver appeared well ahead of the Games: it is dated 1990 and AH 1410. On the obverse the national emblem divides the two dates, the country name appears in both Latin and Thaana script, and the reverse names the event — XXV OLYMPIAD BARCELONA 1992.
Listed as KM# 80, it sits beside two other 250 rufiyaa issues of 1990, a schooner (KM# 81) and a FIFA World Cup coin (KM# 82), showing how the Maldives used its large silver denomination to mark world events.
A non-circulating collector issue, it is a precise fit for Barcelona '92 or aquatic sports themed collections.
