Maldives 10 laari 1960
A 10 laari coin issued in 1960 during the reign of Sultan Muhammad Farid Didi (1954–1968) as a standard circulating coin. The coins were ordered in England and minted at the Royal Mint in London (Tower Hill).
On the obverse is the national coat of arms of the Maldives: a coconut palm, a crescent with a star and two crossed national flags on poles, above a scroll with the Arabic inscription «الدولة المحلديبية» (Ad-Dawlat Al-Mahaldibiyya — «State of Mahaldibiyya»). On the sides of the coat of arms are the dates: Gregorian «1960» and Hijri «١٣٧٩» (1379).
On the reverse is the denomination. Inscriptions in Dhivehi and Arabic: «ملك محلديب» / «10 ލާރި» — «King of Maldives, 10 laari».
The coin reflects the transitional period in the history of the Maldives: in 1960 the archipelago was still a sultanate under British protectorate. The coconut palm in the coat of arms symbolizes the basis of the country’s livelihood, while the crescent and star represent Islam as the state religion. The inscription on the scroll dates back to the era of the national hero Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu, who united the islands in the 16th century.
The coin is suitable for both beginner collectors due to its affordable price and exotic origin, and for experienced ones — as a historical issue of the sultanate era with rare bilingual design.
Besides this coin, VPcoins offers other issues from the same era and region.
