Czechoslovakia 100 korun 1948
A 100 korun coin issued in 1948 in Czechoslovakia as a commemorative silver coin dedicated to the 600th anniversary of the founding of Charles University in Prague.
On the obverse is the national coat of arms of Czechoslovakia — the Czech lion with a Slovak shield on its chest. Around the rim is the inscription «REPUBLIKA ČESKOSLOVENSKÁ» and the year «1948».
On the reverse is depicted Emperor Charles IV kneeling before Saint Prince Wenceslas. To the left of the figures are two shields. Around the rim is the inscription «ŠEST SET LET UNIVERSITY KARLOVY 1348», at the bottom — the denomination «100». The design was created by the famous Czech medallist Otakar Španiel.
The coin reflects Czechoslovakia’s pride in one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Europe. Charles University was founded on 7 April 1348 by the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia Charles IV. The issuance of the commemorative silver coin in 1948 emphasized the centuries-old tradition of Czech education and science.
