The organ of the Golden Hall of Vienna’s Musikverein on one side and the orchestra’s instruments on the other: the tenth-ounce gold Vienna Philharmonic is recognisable at a glance. This 2021 coin belongs to the line the Austrian Mint has been striking since 1989.
The design is by the mint’s chief engraver Thomas Pesendorfer. The reverse brings together the instruments of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, a Vienna horn, a bassoon, a harp and four violins around a cello; the obverse shows the organ of the hall where the orchestra performs, with the legend REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH and the weight and fineness 1/10 UNZE GOLD 999.9. Only the date changes from year to year, which keeps the coin familiar on any market.
The tenth ounce is one of five sizes in the series, from 1/25 up to a full ounce. In the schilling era this coin had a face value of 200 schillings, and since 2002 it has been 10 euros.
UNC grade: the coin has never circulated, there is no wear and the mint lustre is intact. For a year run of Philharmonics this is the 2021 slot, and for a gold collection it is the most accessible size of the series.
The VPcoins catalogue includes both modern commemorative issues and coins of past eras.
