The 2021 Ox is the second animal of the Perth Mint’s third Lunar cycle, which began in 2020 with the Year of the Mouse.
Perth’s Lunar programme was the world’s first coin programme honouring the animals of the lunar calendar: the Mint launched it in 1995. The second gold series was issued from 2008 to 2019, the third has run since 2020, and its gold is struck in sizes from 1/20 to 10 ounces. The Mint’s chief executive Richard Hayes calls the Lunar series one of the most popular in the world.
The 15-dollar coin contains one tenth of an ounce of 99.99% pure gold. The mintage was not limited, and according to the Mint’s report 28,001 of these coins were issued. The obverse carries Jody Clark’s portrait of Elizabeth II.
In a collection it is the 2021 position in the third Lunar series and a personal coin for those born in the Year of the Ox.
The UNC grade means the coin never circulated: there is no wear and the mint lustre is intact; only minor storage marks are acceptable.
