Chinese legend holds that the order of the zodiac animals was settled by a great race across a river. The Monkey comes ninth, and those born in its years are said to be intelligent, quick-witted and adventurous, always looking for new experiences. Monkey years include 1980, 1992, 2004 and 2016, with the next falling in 2028.
This 2016 gold Monkey belongs to the Perth Mint's Australian Lunar Series II, issued from 2008 to 2019. That year the bullion Monkey came in eight sizes from 1/20 oz to one kilogram, and only the one-ounce coin had a mintage cap: 30,000 pieces, all of which sold out. The tenth-ounce $15 coin was struck without a limit.
The reverse shows the monkey with the words Year of the Monkey and the P mintmark, while the obverse carries Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy of Elizabeth II, signed IRB. The coin contains one tenth of a troy ounce of 99.99% pure gold.
Uncirculated (UNC): the coin has never been in circulation.
