The «P125» mark on the reverse of this ounce is no ordinary mintmark: in 2024 the Perth Mint celebrated its 125th anniversary and placed the anniversary mark on its Year of the Dragon coins. This is the coloured silver one dollar from the Australian Lunar Series III.
The reverse shows a coloured Chinese dragon among stylised waves with a flaming pearl, a symbol of wisdom, alongside the character «龍» and the inscription «DRAGON 2024». In Chinese culture the dragon stands for wisdom, enlightenment and benevolence and is traditionally associated with emperors. The Year of the Wood Dragon, fifth sign of the cycle, ran from 10 February 2024 to 28 January 2025.
The obverse holds a notable detail: although the coin is dated 2024, it bears Jody Clark’s memorial portrait of Elizabeth II with her reign dates «1952-2022». Perth’s lunar programme is the oldest in Australia, begun by the mint in 1996 as the country’s first, and the current third series carries that tradition on.
The coin is struck in one troy ounce of 9999 fine silver, and the metal is part of its value alongside the design and colour. UNC condition: never circulated, no wear, mint lustre and coloured image intact. In a Chinese zodiac collection or among Perth Mint anniversary issues, it is a standout piece.
A coin from the VPcoins catalogue is a gift that is interesting to examine and has a story worth telling.
