The key coin of this set is the bimetallic 2 rufiyaa of 2017: that same year the Maldives put it into circulation to replace the previous coin of this value.
The new coin has a nickel brass ring around a nickel-plated steel centre, so a yellow ring frames a silvery core, while the design stays the same: the shell of the triton trumpet, a large sea snail of tropical reefs. The legend «REPUBLIC OF MALDIVES» and the value «ރުފިޔާ» (rufiyaa in Dhivehi, Thaana script) sit alongside the date in the Gregorian and the Hijri calendars.
The other six coins come from the 2008-2017 issues and show how the small change was renewed: in 2008 the 25 and 50 laari moved to brass-plated steel, showing the minaret of the Malé Friday Mosque and a loggerhead turtle; in 2012 the 5 and 10 laari became smaller and lighter while keeping their bonito fish and sailing vessel; the 1 laari still carries the coconut palm, and the 1 rufiyaa the national coat of arms.
Together they form the full range of denominations in their modern form, from the 1 laari to the bimetallic 2 rufiyaa, a convenient starting point for a Maldives collection. Condition AU-UNC: the coins show no signs of circulation or only faint rubbing on the highest points of the relief, with the lustre almost fully preserved.
Numismatics begins with a single coin and continues in the VPcoins catalogue.
