A palm, tuna, a sailing boat, the minaret of an ancient mosque, a sea turtle and the state emblem: the six coins of this set add up to a short story of the Maldives. They are the opening dates of a circulating series that, with minor changes, served the islands for more than three decades: the laari of 1984 and the rufiyaa of 1982.
The rufiyaa is special: the 1 rufiyaa coin first entered circulation on 22 January 1983, and its first pieces, dated 1982, were struck in West Germany. It bears the state emblem with a coconut palm, crescent and star and two crossed flags. The 1984 laari were produced by the Royal Mint in Britain, and the series had no 2 laari coin at all.
Each denomination has its own subject. The 1 laari shows a coconut palm, the 5 laari two skipjack tuna on a scalloped flan with eight notches, the 10 laari a traditional sailing boat on a coin with twelve notches. The 25 laari depicts the Malé Friday Mosque with its minaret of 1675, and the 50 laari a loggerhead turtle.
For a country collection the set completes the entire run of small-change denominations from the first years of the series in one go, both scalloped coins included. UNC grade: the coins never circulated, show no wear and keep their mint lustre.
At VPcoins you will find coins for a collection, for a gift, or simply for the pleasure of owning them.
