In 2012 the Maldivian 5 laari shed its scalloped outfit: the notched coin gave way to a small round piece with a reeded edge. The subject survived the redesign — two skipjack tuna, a fish hard to separate from the Maldivian table.
The tuna swim upward to the left beside the dates «2012» and «١٤٣٣», the Hijri year 1433, and the abbreviation «MMA» of the Maldives Monetary Authority. The other side shows the numeral 5, the word «LAARI» and the country name in Latin and Thaana script: «ދިވެހިރާއްޖެ». The 10 laari with its sailing boat was reduced in size at the same time.
The coin was struck by the Royal Mint in Britain. In the Maldives skipjack is called «kalhubilamas», and the country is one of the notable catchers of this fish. For a collection this is the first year of the new round type and a companion to the scalloped coin of 1984–1990.
UNC grade: the coin never circulated, shows no wear and keeps its mint lustre; only minor bag marks from bank storage are acceptable.
