The «wau bulan», the Kelantan kite whose lower sail is cut in the shape of a crescent, is the design of Malaysia’s second-series 50 sen; this coin is dated 2005.
The name joins two words: «wau» is kite in the Kelantan dialect and «bulan» means moon, the kite being named after that crescent-shaped lower section. Kelantan’s wau bulan are large, richly patterned kites that are still flown today. The other side of the coin carries the hibiscus, Malaysia’s national flower, with the value, date and the legend «BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA».
Bank Negara Malaysia issued the second series on 4 September 1989, giving each denomination an object from Malay tradition, from the giant «rebana ubi» drum on the 1 sen to a keris against songket cloth on the 1 ringgit. This 50 sen type was struck until 2011; from January 2012 the third series took over, while the older coins remained legal tender.
Uncirculated (UNC): never in circulation, no wear, mint lustre intact. A date for a 1989–2011 50 sen run and a natural fit for a collection of coins featuring kites.
