The gasing, a traditional Malay spinning top, spins on the 5 sen: the coin shows the toy in motion, together with the cord used to launch it.
It is one of the six coins of Bank Negara Malaysia’s second series, put into circulation on 4 September 1989. For it the central bank chose objects of traditional life, from a drum on the 1 sen to a keris dagger on the 1 ringgit, and placed on the other side of each the hibiscus, bunga raya, the national flower, with «BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA».
In 1999, 79,224,000 of these 5 sen coins were struck. The type was issued from 1989 to 2011 and then replaced by the third series.
Grade UNC: the coin never circulated, has no wear and keeps its mint lustre, with minor bag marks acceptable. A precise, eye-catching entry for a toys-and-games theme and for a date run of Malaysian 5 sen.
Numismatics begins with a single coin and continues in the VPcoins catalogue.
