From 1973 the Malaysian sen was struck in copper-plated steel, and the 1983 1 sen belongs to this variety, which catalogues call magnetic: unlike the earlier bronze coins, it is drawn to a magnet.
The design stayed the same: Parliament House with the crescent and star of the national flag and the initials «GC» of the British sculptor Geoffrey Colley, who created Malaysia’s first coin series in 1967. The other side reads «MALAYSIA», «1 SEN» and the date.
Steel sen coins were produced until 1988, when the first series gave way to a second featuring symbols of Malay culture. Since 1 April 2008 cash payments have been rounded to 5 sen, and the 1 sen has dropped out of everyday use.
F-VF condition: noticeable wear on the raised parts of the relief, main details and legend legible. One of the later dates of the steel type for a first-series date set.
A collectable coin from VPcoins can be an addition to your own collection or a meaningful gift.
