China 10 yuan 2024 Year of the Dragon
A 10 yuan coin issued in 2024 by the People’s Bank of China as a festive (贺岁) commemorative coin from the «Eastern Calendar» series dedicated to the Year of the Dragon (Jia-Chen).
On the obverse is the national emblem of the People’s Republic of China. Around the rim is the inscription «中国人民银行» (People’s Bank of China), the denomination «10元» and the year «2024». The background is decorated with traditional round floral motifs.
On the reverse is a dragon in traditional Chinese style, created with elements of paper-cutting art (jianzhi) and decorative New Year painting. The dragon is surrounded by floral lanterns and lingzhi mushrooms (symbols of longevity and happiness). On the left is the character «甲辰» (the name of the year in the 60-year cycle).
The coin reflects the ancient Chinese tradition of celebrating the New Year according to the lunar calendar. The dragon is considered the most powerful and auspicious zodiac sign, symbolizing strength, luck, prosperity and imperial power. The large mintage of this coin (about 120 million pieces) emphasizes the cultural significance of the Year of the Dragon for the Chinese people.
