Even the ordinary caribou quarter received a commemorative touch in 2002: the obverse carries the double date 1952 2002 next to the portrait of Elizabeth II, marking fifty years of her reign.
The portrait of the Queen in a diadem is by Dora de Pédery-Hunt, and beneath it is the letter P, which denoted the nickel-plated steel that replaced nickel in 2000. The reverse is Emanuel Hahn’s classic caribou, the standard design of the 25 cents since 1937.
The 2002 mintage was 156,105,000. It is the last year of the de Pédery-Hunt portrait on the quarter: from 2003 it was replaced by the portrait by Susanna Blunt.
For a caribou date run the coin stands out with its jubilee date, and for a collection of Elizabeth II portraits it is the final position of its type.
The UNC grade means the coin never entered circulation: there is no wear and the original mint lustre remains; only minor marks from storage in bank bags are acceptable.
