Eugénio Tavares, whose portrait appears on this Bank of Cape Verde note, was born on 18 October 1867 on the island of Brava and died on 1 June 1930 in Vila Nova Sintra on the same island. He wrote mornas, the lyrics of Cape Verde's best-known song form, in the Creole of his native island.
His life also tells the story of Cape Verdean emigration. From 1900 to 1910 the poet lived in New Bedford, Massachusetts, writing for a Portuguese-language newspaper of exiles, and at home he published a newspaper of his own. He left his island an anthem too: his Hino de Brava became Brava's official anthem.
On the back, a stanza from his Morna de Aguada is accompanied by a cardeal flower (P66a). For a literature-on-banknotes collection, this is a note whose reverse is built around a poem. In UNC condition, it has never circulated.
