The Latin name of the Indian rhinoceros is unicornis, «one-horned», and on the 1994 25 paise that single horn is clearly visible: the animal is shown in profile facing left, with the date above.
The Indian rhinoceros lives in northern India and Nepal; its main stronghold is Kaziranga National Park in Assam. Its thick skin with deep folds looks like armour, and on the coin that plated silhouette is recognisable at once.
The 1994 coin sits mid-way through a type struck in stainless steel from 1988 to 2002: in 1988 steel replaced the earlier metals for the 10, 25 and 50 paise. The obverse shows the Lion Capital of Ashoka and the value in Hindi and English. Since 30 June 2011 the coin has not been legal tender.
Graded XF: light wear only on the highest points, with the rhino and the date fully distinct. For a date run of the 1988-2002 type, this fills the 1994 slot.
