The throw is the climax of a wrestling bout, and that is the very instant the Magyar Nemzeti Bank placed on the 2018 50-forint coin in place of the usual saker falcon. The coin entered circulation on 17 October 2018, three days before the World Wrestling Championships opened in Budapest.
The thematic side shows two wrestlers at the moment of a throw, with the line of the mat separating the scene from the word MAGYARORSZÁG. On the left is the Hungarian flag, its colours rendered in heraldic hatching, with the year 2018 in the middle stripe. The legend BIRKÓZÓ-VILÁGBAJNOKSÁG, «Wrestling World Championship», runs along the arc, and a beaded border frames the field. The design is by István Kósa; the value side is that of the regular 50-forint coin.
The championships took place on 20–28 October 2018 at the László Papp Budapest Sports Arena, with medals in men’s freestyle, Greco-Roman and women’s wrestling, ten weight classes in each style. For the hosts the highlight was Péter Bácsi’s gold in Greco-Roman 82 kg.
The issue was authorised by MNB Decree 32/2018: two million coins went into Hungarian wallets, while the Hungarian Mint placed 12,000 first-day strikes in numbered presentation packs. The coin belongs in a run of Hungary’s commemorative circulating 50 forints and in any sports-themed collection, where it represents wrestling alongside ice hockey and fencing.
Condition UNC: the coin has never circulated, shows no wear and keeps its mint lustre, with at most minor marks from bank bags. For a mass-produced issue, an example like this shows the throw in full detail.
The VPcoins catalogue brings together coins from many countries and eras, from circulation issues to commemorative series, so a collection is easy to continue.
